can’t forget a story I once read in one of Miles Davis’ biographies. It was about a conversation between Miles and John Coltrane. Miles was tired of Coltrane’s never ending solos and invited him to shorten them…to which Coltrane said: “I just can’t stop playing!” – Miles answered: “Just take your sax off your mouth!”. It’s that simple. I think as guitarists we have all been guilty to play too much, too loudly… In my search for a more imaginative approach to soloing, I tried different strategies. Something that really helped me to play more creatively was to train yourself to “not play”. That’s right! I’ll give you a a practical example: Divide a twelve bar blues into three sections, each one consisting of 4 bars. Start soloing over the first 4 bars and then stop.

After 4 bars, start playing again, and so on. Invert the order. Rest 4 bars then play… Select different bar groupings. You should also try odd combinations: play for 3 bars, rest for 2. Stop for 1 bar play for 3, etc… You will soon discover that you can relax more, come up with more creative phrases and you will develop the ability to “say” something interesting without even thinking about it. You will also start paying more attention to what your band mates are doing, what chords the bass player is outlining, the rhythmic ideas introduced by the drummer etc… you will also start suggesting ideas to the rest of the group. However, this will take dedication and focus. You should be working on this at least 30 minutes/practicing session. You sit down on your favourite chair, and practice all possible combinations. Try different types of accompaniment.

One day you use a metronome, another day a sequencer, another day even no accompaniment at all! Try different styles as well…see what happens playing over a swing song, then a Latin one and so forth. Of course you should try this approach on different chord changes. Try “II V I” progressions and then see what happens with standards. Important! After you practice consciously, get up, make yourself a cup of coffee and chill… Then spend something like 10 minutes playing just for the fun of it… You’ll notice immediately how this exercise dramatically changes your playing from the feedback you’ll get from your audience. People will feel that something is going on, a story being told…they’ll stop chatting to pay attention to your music…that is incredible experience, believe me. I remember a rehearsal with a jazz big band years ago… I didn’t like the conductor very much but he said something that I still remember: “When you are soloing, imagine that you are getting paid for the notes you are not playing”

That is an interesting point of view … and a smart way to make more money

I can’t forget a story I once read in one of Miles Davis’ biographies.

can’t forget a story I once read in one of Miles Davis’ biographies.

Often connected with the rich and prime in society, classical music goes beyond generations and has weathered the ages beautifully. Many folk hear the term “classical music” and instantly make a choice that they don’t seem to be interested. a short introduction into this music idiom may quickly change their minds!

The classical period really started in the 9th century with the most heavy period of stress from the 1500′s thru the 20 th century. Plenty of the early discoveries and findings related to music, and especially musical instruments , commenced in this time.

One of the most serious things to develop from the early classical music time was the sonata form. The sonata form makes music more fascinating and is employed as the basic framework for a symphony as it is restated through assorted musical pieces. It’s what makes the great symphonies so thrilling and captivating. Great musicians like Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Strauss made their debut in the classical period. Instrumentalists, chamber music, and the symphony all provide differences on music genres and they each offer something else for their audiences.

Classical music is really more accessible and heard more widely today than ever seen. Through the advancement of integration and technology with today’s composers, it is utilized in films, book stores, restaurants, and television typically. The thrilling thing about today’s technology is that it offers everybody a chance to take part in classical music without the intimidation of attending an opera or dressing for the symphony.

Classical music crosses all cultural, intellectual, and social barriers and has been merged into today’s pop music in numerous ways. Consider the music you hear in Star Wars’ and 2001 : Space Odyssey’ and you’ll quickly notice that classical music is beautifully melodic and interesting.

Adagio’, allegro’, and crescendo’ are just examples of many musical terms used in the world of music. Many of those terms originated from the classical music time and continue to offer a foundation for pop music that is formed today. But it’s not critical to understand these terms to enjoy the pleasantries of classical music.

The thrilling thing about music is that you do not truly have to grasp the history or development of what you hear. All you have got to do is make the effort to listen and decide what you like. Take a risk to try new types and styles of music and you’ll learn that you like classical music.

Music opens up an entire world of possibilities for the earnest listener. If it is Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” or one of today’s popular selections, music creates a world that may instead be uninteresting and lifeless.

Pop music will pop up and vanish and it changes with the time. But classical music is here for many years to come give it a try and you may like it!

Music has been classified into various genres according to the era, place etc. Both of these have influenced music a lot. We will be discussing here about Blues. Blues was originated in the southern part of United States in the end of 19th century. It was formed by the African-Americans. Blues differs a lot from the common rock music. It is much melodious than rock music. The preferred instruments for blues are mainly guitars, piano, drums, saxophone etc. However, the origin of blues has a deep significance. It symbolizes slavery and the culture of the African-Americans after the civil war in America. The African-Americans were used as slaves by the white people at that time, the blues originated during that period of slavery. It holds the pain of the black people.

With time, the blues was modified a lot. Many blues singer became famous leaving the whites behind. It was a matter of winning over the whites for the African-American people. The use of guitar increased a lot later. Guitarist of blues bands started playing tough but melodious blues riffs. Since, people preferred the sound of guitar, the introduction of guitar proved to be helpful. However, the chord progression of blues is different from that rocks or jazz, which were also very people. The 12 bar blues chord progression are mostly used in the blues songs. Blues was also classified into several forms, like the Traditional County Blues, Cool Blues, Jump Blues and West Coast Blues etc. Cool blues had much similarity with the Jazz.

Today, many people, following their tradition and culture go for blues music instead of the most popular rock. But, their version differs a lot from the original blues version. The use of guitar riffs has increased a lot. This increment of the use of guitar has several reasons; sometimes due to the band members’ love for guitar and sometimes for commercial purpose. Since, most people has a weakness for guitar, they prefer the use of guitar riffs in every song. The use of guitar riffs in blues songs attracts them a lot. Modern people always prefer ‘something different’ in every field of their daily life. Hearing unnatural guitar riffs and keyboard riffs in blues is a new experience for them.

Today, very few people go for blues music. Most of them prefer any version of rock, hip-hop, rap etc. And this is not always for passion or tradition; sometimes people choose them for commercial benefit. Blues had to face immense criticism; it was regarded as disreputable by the white people. White people always regarded the black as their slaves; they looked down to them always. So, they could not tolerate the rise of the black people in the field of music. But this used to happen long ago. Nowadays, blues have got the same popularity as jazz or county songs. The use of guitar riffs is a very important factor for this.

Melodious blues songs can be found on the internet nowadays. Some people even prefer blues music instead of rock. The use of riffs has increased a lot. Although, blues singers are almost extinct, some great blues tracks will be in the people’s heart and mind forever.

About Author
Older people prefer the acoustic guitar riffs, as they are more soothing than the electric guitar riffs or the bass guitar riffs.

Jazz is an art form that many guitarists do not fully understand. This is namely due to the fact that they either did not learn the musical system or its foundation, or that they are trained to read staff and don’t know how to explore their instrument. It’s important before you start into jazz to try and get a good feel for the basic chords before delving into the final frontier. Jazz is a complex medium of dissonance and harmony that only one skilled with tonality can fully comprehend. Of course it always helps to have a little map you can folow too, but the ear training is essential to get the most out of it.

Starting with a simply Major Seven chord is usually the best. Once you have heard the sound of this chord you will want to know how to reproduce it. some of the root position chords are difficult to finger at first but you eventually get he hang of it with time just like everything else. Minor Seven is another great variety of chord voicing. It is of course derived from the minor family and has the mood of “sophisticated sadness” to it. Yu will find more often than not there is a feeling associated with every type of chord. Some are happy, some are mellow, some are downright ugly. But given time and placed in the right area in a progression, they can prove to be great assets.
Some of the best songs are really just the easiest ones. They normally contain 3 chords which are generally the 1st, 4th, and 5th degrees of the scale to which you would attribute certain places in the song to. The blues is probably the easiest to understand because its format is based on these three chords all day long!

So you may be asking what is a degree? How many notes does it take to construct a Major Chord? Minor? Seven Chords? The answer is very simple, and as you gain some valuable insights into this territory you will find more often than not something will pop in your understanding. Namely your ability to se music as a whole system instead of piece-mealed parts and bits and pieces. There is an inherent pattern written on the wall of music.

To find out what that pattern is visit www.sfslive.com.

Some years ago I had an opportunity to chat with one of the greats of the jazz guitar. I asked him if he always had a talent for music. He laughed and told me that in fact the exact opposite was true.

He told me the story that when he was a young guitar student that his timing was so bad that his frustrated teacher would snatch the guitar from his hand and would attempt to instill some basic rhythm into his young brain by making him march up and down the room calling out left, right, left, right.

He went on to say that when he tried to read music that the sound that came out bore absolutely no resemblance to the piece he was playing. Yet he became a musician that was famous for being able to play any sheet music put in front of him and to play it so well that it was as though he had been practicing it for years.

These stories intrigued me and I asked him how he managed to go from such talentless beginnings and progress into the famous musician that he had become.

He told me that he firmly believed that his ability today was because of his total lack of talent. He said that he became so frustrated and embarrassed by his hopeless attempts at playing music that he vowed he would conquer the task no matter what.

He devised all sorts of exercises to help him develop a sense of rhythm and timing. He practiced reading sheet music to the point where he read thousands of different pieces over the years. He took on the challenge of mastering music and totally dedicated himself to the task.

As he began to show progress he also began to get compliments from his astounded teacher and from his fellow students who had formally laughed at him and teased him. He started to enjoy the compliments until, what had started as a determined act of frustration, eventually became a joy and the love of his life.

This gentleman’s story is not the only one of its kind. If you take the time to read biographies then you will discover that, in every field of endeavor, there are countless stories of people who became great in spite of, or because of, a lack of talent in that field.

Then if talent isn’t a necessary ingredient for success, what is?

If you look for the common trends amongst those who overcame a lack of talent you will find that they each had a strong emotional incentive to succeed and they each had an all-consuming dedication to performing the necessary tasks required for success.

If you want to be successful then these are the two traits for you to develop.

First you need to develop a strong, emotional driving force directed at your success. This driving force could be initially based in positive emotion or negative emotion. As long as it gets you up and into gear and keeps you striving and achieving it will one day turn into love and passion for your chosen field.

Then you need the dedication to keep going and to keep getting up when you are knocked down. If something is worth mastering then it is worth doing poorly long enough to develop the skills required to do it well. The important distinction here is that while you are doing it poorly you need to be consciously looking for, and trying, ways to improve your results by improving your actions.

If ever you are tempted to use a lack of talent as an excuse for not becoming great then I suggest that you read this article again and accept that the need for talent is over-rated.
